Limerick Northern Distributor Road

AN TAISCE STATEMENT FOLLOWING DECISION BY LIMERICK CITY & COUNTY COUNCIL TO ADOPT VARIATION 5(a) OF THE LIMERICK COUNTY DEVELOPMENT PLAN

An Taisce acknowledges that the Limerick Northern Distributor Road seeks to solve challenges relating to transport in certain parts of the Limerick Metropolitan Area, such as in Corbally and Castletroy, and in Limerick City centre also, and that the decision by the Council to support it was made in good faith. An Taisce fully supports infrastructural development that will lead to the long term and sustainable economic well being of Limerick City and the Midwest Region. However, it must be stressed than there has been no thorough analysis that supports the construction of the Northern Distributor Road, and it was therefore premature of the Council to make this decision.

An Taisce calls on Limerick City and County Council to commission a professional study that examines the need for the road. It is An Taisce’s firm belief that such a study will propose significantly more effective and beneficial solutions for Limerick City and the Midwest. A principal concern relating to the proposed Northern Distributor Road relates to the likelihood of it exacerbating low density urban sprawl and car dependency, which are proven to have a very severe and stifling effect on economic development. There is also a very serious concern relating to the potential for the road to cause increased flooding, both in its immediate environs, and also upstream and downstream in highly populated residential and industrial areas close to the city, as well as in agricultural areas.

An Taisce is committed to working with Limerick City & County Council to ensure that the best solutions to transport challenges are implemented.
