An Taisce Limerick welcomes the formation of the new Limerick Cycling Campaign. The work of similar cycling campaigns in other cities, notably Dublin, has had a huge effect on increasing the number of cyclists, which is good for society, and increasing pressure on the State to provide a safe environment for all cyclists from aged 8 to 80.
Limerick is coming from a very low base, with only a miniscule number of journeys made by bicycle. Some of the main reasons for this are as follows –
- Poor road design / prioritisation of road space for cars leading to an unsafe cycling environment
- Very low investment in cycling infrastructure
- Suburbanisation leading to increased journey distances
We wish the Limerick Cycling Campaign Well and look forward to working with them in the years ahead.
